Loch Katrine, a historic freshwater loch and popular visitor destination in the Trossachs region of the Scottish Highlands, is steeped in heritage. Once the domain of Rob Roy MacGregor, its name originates from the Gaelic ceathairne, referring to bands of clan warriors or cattle raiders. Today, it plays a critical role in Scotland’s water infrastructure.

In the mid-19th century, Glasgow faced a growing public health crisis due to contaminated water supplies, including outbreaks of cholera. In response, civic leaders identified Loch Katrine as the ideal water source, capable of providing over 50 million gallons of clean water per day. The resulting engineering marvel, designed by John Frederick Bateman, included an expansive network of tunnels, dams, pipe systems and service buildings, many of which remain in operation today.
